POSTPONING OF JEE NEET 2020 UPDATES

POSTPONING OF JEE NEET 2020 UPDATES

On August 17, the Supreme Court rejected the petition a group of 11 students filed where they demanded postponing the 2020 JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Main and NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) exams--conducted every year across the country by the National Testing Agency (NTA)--are scheduled in September; JEE Main from September 1 to 6 and NEET on September 13.

Justice Arun Mishra of SC, who headed a three-judge bench hearing the petition, said: “Life cannot be stopped. We have to move ahead with all safeguards.... Can we just stop exams? We should move on.”

The Supreme Court decision has opened a Pandora’s box. Thousands of students have gone on hunger strike demanding the postponement of the examinations and political parties have taken up the issue, citing the safety of children amid a pandemic and spike in Covid cases. Students supposed to take the exam are left confused, and parents and academicians are divided.

About 2.5 million students are supposed to sit for the two exams this year. They have already been postponed twice. While JEE Main was scheduled from April 7 to April 11 and then from July 18 to July 23, NEET was scheduled for May 3 and then for July 26.

According to NTA, around 750,000 admit cards have been downloaded out of 858,000 registrations for JEE Main. The agency has given almost all the candidates supposed to take these two exams across the country the “first choice of centre cities”. The exam centres have also been increased from 570 to 660 for JEE Main and from 2,546 to 3,843 for NEET.
